Self-help groups
Self-help groups are a valuable resource for people who have a gambling addiction. These groups bring together people who are all going through the same thing: having a gambling addiction. In the Netherlands there are two major foundations that organize self-help groups: the AGOG and the GA, but also many addiction care institutions have a self-help group.
The main advantage of a self-help group is the support of peers. People in these groups understand exactly what you are going through because they themselves are struggling with gambling addiction. This shared experience provides support and understanding; these people know what you are going through.
Also, self-help groups provide a safe and non-judgmental environment. You can talk openly about your experiences, concerns and successes without others judging. It can be a huge relief and helps to tackle shame and loneliness associated with addiction.
Regularly attending meetings provides structure and routine, which is important during your addiction recovery. Meetings provide a set time to reflect on your progress, get support and maintain your motivation. You also learn from each other by sharing coping strategies and success stories. This can inspire you and give you new insights.
Anonymous self-help groups use the 12-step program. Read more about the 12 steps here.
Another advantage of self-help groups is their low-threshold nature. Groups are often free and anonymous. This makes them accessible to everyone. Most groups also have meetings for loved ones.
Self-help groups are a great complement to professional help. It creates a community and people who help and support each other on the road to recovery.
