Online gambling: what to watch out for?
Since 2021, online gambling has been permitted in the Netherlands. That means there are companies offering gambling games with a licence from the government. But beware: not all websites where you can gamble are safe!
How do you know if a website is safe?
First check the Gambling Guide on the website of the Gambling Authority. Find the name of the website or app or the name of the company and see if they have a licence
Logo of the Kansspelautoriteit: A real gambling site in the Netherlands must have a logo of the Kansspelautoriteit. This way you can be sure they are legal.
Dutch language: A reliable site is in Dutch.
Good customer service: There should be a clear phone number or contact form where you can ask questions.
Known payment methods: You can often pay with iDeal on legal sites.
Information on safe gaming: There should be a page with tips on how to gamble safely, such as setting limits, self-tests and help with gambling problems
Gambling stop/Cruks register: If you have a gambling stop and are therefore on the Cruks register (because you want to stop gambling), you can no longer gamble on legal sites in the Netherlands.
Why are legal gambling sites important?
Safety: Legal gambling sites adhere to strict rules so you can play safely.
Reliability: You really get your money paid out when you win.
Help: Legal gambling sites often offer help to people with gambling problems.
What if you come across an illegal gambling site?
Then report it! You can report it anonymously here via the Gambling Authority.
Why is it important to only gamble on legal sites?
On illegal websites, you have no protection. You are never sure if you will get your money back if you win. And if you need help, you can't get it.
